1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device (computer, tablet, or phone) when you visit. They are used for a wide range of purposes — from keeping you logged in, to remembering your preferences, to tracking your behaviour across the web for advertising purposes.
Not all cookies are the same. The law distinguishes between:
- Strictly necessary (essential) cookies — required for a website to function. These cannot be switched off. No consent is required for these under UK law.
- Functional cookies — remember your preferences (e.g. language or region). Consent is required.
- Analytics cookies — measure how visitors use a site (e.g. Google Analytics). Consent is required if data is shared with third parties.
- Advertising / targeting cookies — used to build a profile of you and show relevant ads. Consent is always required.
SafeOnline UK only uses strictly necessary cookies. We do not use any other category.
2. Cookies we use
We set only one first-party cookie on this site. It is strictly necessary and records your preference when you dismiss the cookie notice, so it does not reappear on every page.

We do not currently use any analytics platform. If we introduce analytics in future, this policy will be updated and the cookie notice on the site will be updated to seek your consent before any analytics cookies are set.
3. What we do not use
We want to be completely transparent about what we have deliberately chosen not to use on this site:
Advertising cookies
We do not run adverts. We do not use cookies to build a profile of you for advertising or retargeting on other websites.
Third-party analytics
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, Hotjar, Mixpanel, or any similar tool that sends your data to a third party.
Social media trackers
We do not embed social media widgets (Like buttons, share buttons, feeds) that set tracking cookies from platforms like Facebook, X, or TikTok.
Cross-site tracking
We do not track your browsing activity on other websites or share any data with advertising networks or data brokers.
Personalisation cookies
We do not use cookies to build a profile of you or personalise site content based on your past behaviour.
Children's data
In line with the ICO's Children's Code, we do not knowingly collect data from under-13s. Our kids' pages set no cookies at all.
4. Third-party services
Some parts of this site rely on trusted third-party services to function. These services may set their own cookies or log certain data. We have selected providers who operate with privacy as a priority.
Netlify
SafeOnline UK is hosted by Netlify, Inc. (San Francisco, USA). Netlify processes form submissions — including our contact form and email alert sign-up — on our behalf. As part of its infrastructure operation, Netlify may set its own technical cookies or log your IP address for security and performance purposes. These are operational rather than tracking cookies.

jsDelivr (Tabler Icons)
We load icon fonts from the jsDelivr content delivery network (jsdelivr.net). When your browser requests these files, jsDelivr may log your IP address as standard CDN access logging. jsDelivr does not set advertising cookies or use this data for tracking. See jsDelivr's privacy policy.
Links to external organisations
Our site links to external organisations including Childline, CEOP, the NSPCC, Ofcom, the ICO, and others. When you follow a link to any external website, that organisation's own cookie and privacy policies apply. We are not responsible for, and have no control over, cookies set by third-party websites.
We recommend reviewing the privacy and cookie policies of any external website you visit, including those we link to.
5. Your rights
Under UK GDPR and PECR, you have rights in relation to how your data is handled, including data stored in cookies. Because our one cookie stores no personal information (just the value 1), most of these rights have limited practical application here — but they apply in full to our broader data practices described in our privacy policy.
6. Managing and deleting cookies
You can view, manage, and delete cookies stored on your device at any time through your browser's settings. The steps vary by browser:

sol-cookie-notice cookie, the cookie notice banner will reappear on your next visit to the site. This is because the banner has no way of knowing you have previously dismissed it. Simply click "Got it" again to dismiss it.
Blocking all cookies in your browser may affect some interactive features on this site. In particular, the Family Safety Check and Family Tech Contract Builder use browser session storage (not cookies) to hold your answers temporarily — blocking all storage may prevent these tools from working correctly.

7. Changes to this policy
We will update this cookie policy if our use of cookies changes. If we introduce any non-essential cookies — for example, an analytics tool to understand how visitors use the site — we will update this policy and the cookie notice banner to seek your explicit consent before setting those cookies.
Any changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We will not make changes that reduce your privacy protections without clearly informing you.
